POSITION SUMMARY
Per Diem Substitute Teachers provide instruction to students in the absence of the regular classroom teacher and in accordance with the designated education curriculum. Per Diem Substitute Teachers must strive for excellence in all facets of instruction and student learning, adjusting instruction to the needs of individual students, including those with IEPs. They must work collaboratively and coordinate instruction and assessment with other staff members.
SCHEDULE: 7:15 AM TO 3:00 PM
GRADE LEVELS/SUBJECT AREAS: ALL (please indicate your areas of interest and your availability on the application)
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Implement and teach lesson plans and instructions as directed by the absent teacher or create lesson plans in the absence of a prepared lesson
- Provide instruction and engage students in large group settings, small group settings, and one-on-one, using a multitude of instructional strategies
- Maintain a safe, positive, disciplined, and respectful culture in the classroom
- Supervise students outside of the classroom during lunch, recess, or in hallways
- Report any student injuries, illness, and serious discipline problems to school administration
- Communicate and uphold school rules, values, and expectations in a clear and consistent manner, in and out of the classroom
- Consult with Special Education Teachers to modify lessons and create accommodations for special education students
- Attend Special Education/IEP meetings as needed
- Attend professional development activities
- Ensure regular and predictable attendance on a daily basis
- Perform all extra duties for the absent teacher as required by the principal

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Current PA Teaching Certification preferred
- Bachelor degree required
- Classroom teaching experience required with the ability to effectively manage a classroom and deliver engaging lessons
- Current FBI, PA Criminal History, and Child Abuse clearances are required
- Commitment to urban education and a belief that all students should be held to high academic standards
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, teamwork and leadership skills

WORKING CONDITIONS
The working conditions of a Per Diem Substitute Teacher include:
- Very high levels of social interaction, with daily and consistent work with children, parents, and other teachers.
- Communicating with people face-to-face on a daily basis, as well as communication through phone, e-mail, letters, and memos.
- Working very near others, within a few feet or less, which may result in exposure to diseases and infections, such as colds and influenza.
- Exposure to loud sounds and high noise levels on a regular basis.
- Responsibility for the health and safety of the children in their school.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Per Diem Substitute Teachers are regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
